Does anyone have any experience with this? So far it makes me woozy at small doses, and trip at high doses. Will I become used to it? Will it actually boost serratonin?
Who has had success? And how long did it take to kick in?

I believe it's pretty well established that 5-HTP can boost serotonin levels, but as far as I know, that's only helpful if you have low serotonin levels. If you don't, it's not really going to do much. I believe the only way to know for sure is to have bloodwork done.

Isn't there some potential danger to the liver as well? Especially if one eats a protein rich diet?

Ross - I'm curious, are you professionally involved with neuroplete somehow? My understanding is that there have been no clinical trials done on neuroplete - got anything you can offer up that's appropriate for a science oriented tribe? I'm not trying to be dismissive here, just curious as to what solid evidence there is for neuroplete amidst all the claims and testimonials.

And, no offense meant here, I get a bit suspicious when someone seems to be on tribe just to promote something.

serotonin is jut 5-HT, so yes your brain can break off that P and make more serotonin.
changing serotonin levels can affect lots of things, including melatonin levels, so be careful.

mood stabilization/elevation effects usually occur within a few weeks with SSRIs, so probably within that timeframe.
it sounds like you are sensitive to it as well, so i'd be extra careful with how you react to it.

and DONT take it if you are taking antidepressants or St. John's Wort, both of which raise serotonin as well.

I had mild success with it, and it didn't take too long to kick in. Although I much prefer L-Tryptophan.

    Hi Moonmom,
5-HTP will raise your levels of seratonin. When taken alone, it will also decrease your levels of dopamine. These two master neurotransmitters must be in balance for you to get symptom relief. If you take a product like NeuroReplete, you can get the correct balance of building block proteins to give you optimal levels of both of these critically important master regulators of your nervous system. You can find more information at www.neuroassist.com.

I've had some sucess with this. It takes several days of ingestion (3-5 days) to make changes, makes you sleep/groggy so best taken at night. Really only seemed to work in cases of extreme seratonin depletion perhaps since the 'boost' really isn't that big if you aren't also supplementing your diet with the other building blocks of seratonin. Comments here are not based in my scientific background but by treating myself as my own test subject.

5-HTP supplements can cause fatigue even at low doses due to melatonin - 50% conversion rate from 5-HTP through the same metabolic pathway.
I think tryptophan would be a better supplement since the body has better control over how it is metabolized.
